Corporate Cup – Rd 4 winners were Landscape Larrikins. We have 2 more rounds to be played. Rd 5 Monday 5th Feb and Rd 6 “Fantastic Friday” on the 9th Feb.

Last week’s Midweek Pennant saw loses to both Div 1 and 2. We have one more round to finish the season.

Div 2 had a good win against Mortlake in Weekend Pennant, keeping their finals hopes alive. Div 3 and Div 5 both had loses and will be looking to bounce back in the final round. Div 5 are assured of a finals berth. Div 3 will be looking for a good win to ensure they stay in the finals hunt.

28/1/2024

It’s been a busy week with Corporate Cup, Kevin Lee Tournament and Pennant matches. A BIG “SHOUT OUT” to all those Club Members who have contributed to the success of all these events. We still have 3 Rounds of Corporate Cup, Margaret Sumner Tournament, February Triples, Rotary Club tournament and 2 rounds of Pennant matches and hopefully Finals for some our teams.

Our club functions because of the “behind the scenes” work of our volunteers who keep everything ticking along.

Midweek Pennant

Div 1 had a good win against Warrnambool. Div 2 lost to Timboon and Div 4 had a draw with Timboon.

Weekend Pennant

Div 2 move back into the 4 and keep their finals hopes alive with a win against 2nd placed Warrnambool Red. – Div 3 move to 3rd spot with a determined win over Warrnambool White.  With a couple more rink wins they should stay in the finals race. Div 5 remain on top of the ladder after this week’s Bye. They play 2nd place Dennington this week and will be looking for a competitive performance.

We are up to Rd 4 of our Corporate Cup –  3 teams remain undefeated.

26/1/2024

WDPA – Champion of Champions

Helen and Ron represented the Club in our Playing Area Champion of Champions event. They both performed well. Helen lost to Linda Creek by 1 shot in a great match. Ron won his 1st match against Ian Prout with a solid performance and then lost to Jimmy Barling in his next match.

A mixed start to 2024 Pennant and Over 60s. Over 60s celebrated the return to competition with a great win over Camperdown, hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Midweek Pennant started well with Div 1 and Div 2 both recording a draw against higher ranked teams. Div 4 lost by the narrowest of margins (1 shot). With 3 rounds to go all teams will be endeavouring to notch up a win or 2.

Weekend Pennant was a mixed result – Div 3 won away against City and sit in 4th spot on the ladder. With 2 home games and 1 away they should notch up a couple of wins to stay in the 4. Div 2 suffered a severe set back to their finals hopes and will need to win at least 2 of their upcoming games to have a chance of moving back into the top 4. Div 5 remain on top of the ladder, despite an unexpected lose to Timboon. They have a bye this week and should remain in the 4 with one more win.

We are up to Rd 3 of our Corporate Cup and – at this stage 6 teams remain undefeated.

This Friday we have our Kevin Lee Invitational 4s tournament. We have a full contingent of teams and look forward to a great day. Thanks Dan for ensuring this event runs smoothly each year.

Bowls Victoria UPDATE: 5.00pm Wednesday 27th October, 2021.

Play/Vaccination advice for clubs:

We are continuing to work with Government to help comply with the Government Directions and find more practical solutions for clubs to operate. While we have some clarity from the recently released Open Premise Directions, until we have full clarity, we have provided Questions and Answers relating to key issues.

There are two key definitions now used by Government which are crucial to understanding the new directions:

  • Community Sport (only events conducted by Bowls Victoria including Pennant, State Championships)

“A further four new members were inducted into the Hall of Fame; Arnold O’Brien OAM, Margaret Sumner OAM, John Snell and Betty Collins. On receiving his award, Arnold remarked, “it’s a great honour to be here tonight, when you start playing bowls don’t think of anything like this ever happening to you”. Arnold said he was fortunate to be fit enough to have just completed his 69th year of bowling and hopes that there will be a few more still to come.

During Margaret Sumner’s acceptance speech, she observed that she was the youngest Hall of Fame recipient of the evening, and at 80 years young it seems bowls might just have something to do with the group’s longevity. Margaret was seen daily during State Champions Week in Bendigo, keenly watching the next generation of bowlers, keeping stats and conversing with the locals and players, and whoever was up for a chat about bowls. She simply loves our sport.” extract from 2019-20 Awards Night & Hall of Fame. What a night! by Melanie Allen

Margaret’s many achievements recognised by Bowls Victoria.

The  Club held a special lunch, at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, in recognition of Margaret Sumner being inducted into the Bowls Victoria – Hall of Fame. Induction into the Hall of Fame is the highest recognition for service to Bowls Victoria and the sport of Bowls in Victoria.

Club Ladies Chair, Roslyn Ross, welcomed the many family, friends and club members and spoke of Margaret’s many achievements. These include an Order of Australia, Australian Bowls Hall of Fame inductee and successfully representing Australia, Victoria and Terang in the game of lawn bowls. Margaret represented Australia in World Bowls, 2 Commonwealth Games, Pan Pacific Games and Trans-Tasman Tests. She played 187 games as an Australian representative.

Heather Lydford, from Cobden, then spoke of Margaret’s love of the game and the enduring friendships that have evolved.

Club President, Barry Stonehouse, thanked Margaret for her dedication and commitment to our club and presented her with a lovely bouquet of flowers.

Margaret thanked everyone for their attendance and spoke fondly of her many achievements and the friendships she has enjoyed over many years.

Hi all,

Our AGM will be held on Sunday 6th May at 4pm.

  1. Could all members attend if possible as we have a lot of important issues to decide and the committee needs your input.
  2. Could any report and items of general business be emailed to me by early next week so that I can add them in written form to the agenda. This saves lots of time at the meeting. Later next week I will send you all a sheet to add to the running sheet of such stuff. Please print both and bring them to the AGM.
  3. We are endeavouring to have the 3 new uniform design proposals selected by the sub-committee put on line so that you can see them and form an opinion prior to the AGM.

Ta, John Gherashe.

GD’s New Year Predictions.

1/1/2021.

Happy New Year everyone. Wishing you all the very best for the coming year.

Looking forward – 2nd half of the season.

Overall our club should be pleased with our performance in 2020. We have been competitive in all Divisions and have a number of teams who are capable of making the finals in 2021.

Looking Forward – Weekend Pennant

Div 1 – Consistency across all rinks is the key. Play 3 games at home. Finals look out of the question and it is all about moving up the ladder and not being relegated. Prediction at least 2 wins.

Div 3 – A good win, away, leading into the break, play 3 home games but will need to prove they can match it with the teams higher up the ladder. Prediction 4 wins, if they play as they did in Rd 8. Have 3 strong rinks and should make the finals.

Div 4 – Sit in 5th spot and are only out of the 4 on percentage. Have 4 home games and play 3 of the bottom sides. Prediction 4 wins with finals beckoning.

Div 5 – Currently in 3rd position, but have had little game time, may struggle with 4 away games but benefit from playing teams lower down the ladder. Prediction 3 wins and hopefully finals.

Looking Forward –  Midweek

Div 1 – Should go into the 2nd half of the season with some confidence, but have a tough run home. Prediction 3 wins. Like our Weekend Div 1 side, need consistency across all rinks.

Div 3 – Playing well and sit on top of the ladder. Red to make the finals and win another 5 games. Should stay on top of the ladder.

Div 3 – Green can make the finals but will need to win at least 4 games. With good performances should be able to make the four.

Looking Forward – Over 60s

After defeating the Top team in their last game, the Over 60s team should have the confidence to continue up the ladder. Should make the finals with 4 wins.

24/12/2020

Rd 8 2020. Midweek Div 3 Red

Unseen

CLUB HEROES

As we know a lot of work takes place, behind the scenes, to keep our club running. Often, this goes unnoticed by many members, but not by our HAPPY HELPERS – Tilly and Bessie.

A number of members have been noticed doing jobs including: removing, cleaning and replacing the green gutters, cleaning the kitchen and club house floors, cleaning toilets, grooming B green, attacking aphids, mowing, hedge trimming, removing dead plants and putting down weed matting. Not to mention the unseen work that our treasurer, secretary, president, committee, team managers, selectors, match committee and grounds committee do. If you know who these people are, remember to thank them for their efforts.

A BIG THAN YOU on behave of all club members to our Unseen Club Heroes. You get this months: TILLY and BESSIE.  UNSEEN HEROES AWARD.

Many of our teams had an up and down season, with some excellent wins and close matches against higher ranked teams, but also some disappointing loses. Consistency, at times, seemed to be something that escaped us.

As a reflection on our performance, I feel, that we are a club that values far more than winning or losing. That we look to take care of each other and recognise the important social, wellbeing and health benefits that many of our club members gain from being part of a team and club environment. To me, as a club, we play a significant role in many of our members lives and that we all benefit from this. This is what makes a successful club.

Well done to everyone who has contributed to the club this season. To our players, club administrators, selectors, grounds and catering teams, event organisers, match committees, team managers and sponsors, I say thank you for your dedication, time, effort and support in making club the success that it is.

16/2/2020

An interesting week. Great results with our midweek teams winning all 3 matches and Over 60s finishing with a good win. Our Saturday teams were not so successful losing all matches.A number of, last minute, changes were required to fill teams. Thanks to those players who stepped in to unfamiliar roles and to our selectors who had to juggle players at the last minute.

A personal thanks to everyone for the support and well wishes after my accident last week. Special mention to Heather, Jill and Terry who coped with the slight detour on the way home. Glad to say everyone is OK.
